Multivitamin supplements are often essential for maintaining a healthy brain, since many of us aren’t getting enough of them from our regular diets. In addition to a multivitamin, many experts recommend that you take calcium and magnesium, as these are not typically put in a multivitamin. Also, since most of our bodies are deficient in omega-3 fatty acids, it may be necessary to take these in addition to a multivitamin. These types of fatty acids are also known as EPA and DHA. Usually these supplements come in the form of fish oil.

Another thing that can improve your brain health is B Complex Vitamins. These also contain folic acid, b-6, and b-12, but in much larger amounts than a multivitamin contains. If your body is depleted of these vitamins, you may need more than the recommended amount, and that is why B Complex Vitamins can be useful in addition to a multivitamin. B Vitamins have many health benefits including giving you more energy and elevating your mood.

Lastly, because many of us have poor diets and/or a lot of stress, you should also consider taking Probiotics. This is a supplement that supports your intestinal health by replacing bad bacteria with good bacteria. Taking a Probiotic can improve brain health because the brain and stomach affect each other in so many ways, and usually when one isn’t functioning well, the other one isn’t either.

If you feel tired, unfocused, depressed, or emotionally numb, it may be because your brain is lacking the nutrients it needs. In today’s society, lacking nutrients to keep your brain functioning properly is actually fairly common. This is because much of our food is processed and we don’t eat it in its original, natural state. The good news is that there are supplements available that can help you fix your brain and make you feel better as a result.

The most basic supplement you should consider taking is a multivitamin, preferably one that contains the basic essential vitamins and minerals. Research has shown that ninety-two percent of Americans are deficient in one or more essential vitamins and minerals, 80 percent are deficient in vitamin D, and over 99 percent are deficient in the essential omega-3 fatty acids. So it’s especially important to find a vitamin that contains enough vitamin D and omega-3 fatty acids, or else supplement your multivitamin with these pills to make sure your body is getting the required amounts.

Additionally, other important things you should look for in a multivitamin are vitamins a, e, d-3, c, k-1, b-1, b-2, b-3, b-6, b-12, carotenes, folic acid, biotin, pantothenic acid, iodine, zinc, selenium, copper, manganese, chromium, molybdenum, potassium, boron, vanadium, inositol, choline, and iron. These are the essential substances that your brain needs in order to function properly.

Supplements for Depression

There are many supplements on the market that can help you if you are suffering from depression and want to try the natural way instead of using prescription drugs. In some cases you can also use these supplements in addition to prescription drugs, but you should discuss this with your doctor to make sure you don’t take anything that will react with your current prescription drug in a harmful way.

One supplement out there is called 5-HTP, which converts to serotonin in the body. Serotonin is an important chemical for maintaining a positive mood. Another thing you can take is tryptophan, which converts to 5-HTP and then to serotonin. You should only take one of these two things, not both. If you are taking a prescription anti-depressant and you want to take one of these things, it is especially important to discuss it with your doctor first.

Two other supplements you can take that compliment each other are GABA and theanine. GABA helps induce relaxation, while theanine is an amino acid that is found in green tea.

Two other things you can take are L-tyrosine and I-phenylalanine. These supplements help increase dopamine in the body. Dopamine is a neurotransmitter which influences mood, sleep, attention, and memory (among other things). When using these you would need to take L-tyrosine first, for about a week, and then add I-phenylalanine.

When used together, the supplements mentioned up to this point provide an effective combination to help reduce depression. There are also a lot of other supplements out there that you can take as well.

One supplement, SAM-e, is considered by some to be a natural cure for depression. Studies have shown that SAM-e works best for those who lack energy and motivation, and also don’t have a lot of anxiety.

Another natural alternative to anti-depressants is St. John’s Wort. This supplement is derived from a plant and has been around for quite a while. It has been shown to have fewer side effects than prescription anti-depressants.

B vitamins also play a significant role in elevating mood. The B vitamins most common in relieving depression are B6 and B12, which aid in converting tryptophan into serotonin. They also have many other health benefits. Additionally, the vitamin B5 can also help reduce depression, as it tends to give you more energy and helps the body metabolize different foods.

Some other supplements that have been shown to relieve depression are vitamin D, fish oils, NADH, DHEA, and Maca. There are also many supplements on the market that combine some of the individual supplements mentioned here into one pill, thus reducing the total number of pills you have to take.

Whey Protein Increases Serotonin Levels

Drinking a whey protein shake is a good way to get serotonin into the body. Serotonin is a very important neurotransmitter that controls mood. A lack of it’s presence in the body is linked to anxiety and depression. Whey protein shakes contain the essential amino acid called tryptophan, which converts to serotonin in the body. Tryptophan is found naturally in eggs, milk, and lean meats such as turkey. Additionally, eating high carbohydrate foods and tryptophan together will allow the tryptophan to work better in the body. This is because carbs tend to release insulin in the body which clears the blood stream of other amino acids that compete with tryptophan. This is generally what a whey protein shake provides is high carbohydrate and tryptophan levels.

Drinking whey protein can also help you lose weight. Studies have shown that elevated moods are associated with weight loss. This is because many people eat more when they feel anxious or depressed. In addition to drinking a whey protein shake once or twice a day, you may want to consider taking a fish oil capsule and a multivitamin. Fish oils contain Omega-3 fatty acids which are known to elevate mood and multivitamins contain essential vitamins and minerals that help the body function better.
