Thirty years ago makeup pioneers created mineral makeup that was all natural, contained no chemicals and no preservatives and claimed to actually benefit the skin. The makeup evolved somewhat and now there is no major makeup line that does not have their version of mineral makeup.
The most commonly used type of mineral makeup is powder foundation and blushes. These are applied by buffing them into the skin with a brush, giving the appearance of a very fine cream. Fans of mineral makeup love it for its light-feeling coverage, its ability to lighten dark circles easily and they rave about it for the luminescence it gives to their skin.
Critics of the makeup complain that the colors make ethnic skin look ashy and that if they apply too much it can make their skin too wrinkled. Some critics claim that today’s mineral makeup is simply a convincing marketing technique and many of the mineral ingredients have been common in makeup for decades. Other dermatologists agree with this statement but reply that mineral makeup does not contain many of the irritants as other makeup. These irritants include fragrances, dyes and preservatives.
Remember also that not all-mineral makeup is created equal. Some stay true to their all-natural mission while other claim to be all-natural while including binders and fragrances that can irritate the skin.
